Braai Republic: South African BBQ

Tuesday, June 18, 2013

I've been called a picky eater. Honesty, I just know what I like and what I don't like! But I will try everything once! And to prove it, couple of weeks ago, it was South African food.

Gloria, my most culturally diverse friend, took me out to one of her favorite spots in the city for what she calls her own personal comfort food. Braai Republic, located in Itaewon, stands proudly as the only South African eatery in town, and plates the most heartwarming open-fire grilled lamb chops I've ever had. Half South African herself, Glo said grew up on this stuff. Boerewors, pap, and chops on a weekly basis... I don't think I've ever been jealous of someone else's childhood until now...

There's really no other way to describe it other than that's what you'd expect great home-cooked food to be like. I decided on the brunch set in the end (what's new?). Lamb chops were delicious. Mielie pap, a South African corn meal, was a little dry, but I didn't mind too much. The boerewors, a specially spiced farmer's sausage, were my favorite. Throw an egg on top, and you know you got yourself a perfect Sunday meal!
